ICE Wales supports a number of activities designed to attract young people into the civil engineering profession:
ICE Wales Bridge to Schools - For primary pupils, ICE Wales has funded three (one for South, one for North and one for West Wales) model, cable stayed bridges which are assembled by pupils, who then walk across and experience what they have constructed. Each Bridge is accompanied by learning materials and supervised by an ICE Presenter supported by graduate members of ICE. Contacts: South Wales Dave Smith, david.smith179@ntlworld.com , North Wales Dyfed Jones, dyfed.jones@cskills.org
ICE Wales Schools to Bridges - ICE meets the costs of Welsh schools that visit the Severn Bridges Visitors Centre (www.onbridges.com). Together with the trustees of the Centre, we hope the scheme will increase the usefulness of the Centre in encouraging young people to consider science and engineering as a career.
ICE Wales Ambassadors - a programme to link civil engineering graduates to secondary schools. These ‘Engineering Ambassadors’ will act as role models and raise awareness of civil engineering. Contacts: South Wales, Bob Gilchrist, bob.gilchrist@ice.org.uk , North & Mid Wales, Mike Foster, mike.foster@ice.org.uk
South Wales Engineering Team Challenge - a scheme to encourage 14 year-old students in South Wales to consider a career in Engineering at professional level. Contact: info@engineering-team-challenge.co.uk or www.engineering-team-challenge.co.uk
Education Engineering Scheme in Wales - operates to show Y12/13 (6th Form) students how valuable an engineering career can be. Contact: Austin Matthews EESWAustin@aol.com
